Saint-Émilion in one day from Bordeaux: an itinerary without a car
A medieval village listed by UNESCO, vineyards as far as the eye can see and tastings in the châteaux: Saint-Émilion deserves a full day. Here is how to organise it from Bordeaux, and why going with a driver makes the day easier.
How long does it take to get there?
Saint-Émilion is about 40 km from Bordeaux, roughly three quarters of an hour by road in normal conditions. Parking is limited in the village and the streets are narrow: being dropped off by a driver makes the visit much simpler.
An itinerary for the day
- Morning, departure from Bordeaux. Your driver picks you up at your hotel, your address, the airport or Saint-Jean station.
- Late morning, the village. A walk through the medieval streets, the monolithic church and the King’s Tower.
- Lunch. A table in the village or at a wine estate. Book ahead in season.
- Afternoon, tasting. A visit to a château or wine estate, to be booked directly with the producer.
- End of the day. One last stroll through the village, then back to Bordeaux: you return without driving.
Why go without a car
- You taste wine with peace of mind, without worrying about driving back.
- You avoid parking, which is often complicated in the village.
- You keep your own pace: the driver drops you off and picks you up at the agreed time.
The options
For a full day, a driver at your disposal is the most flexible option: one driver for several stops, on quote. For a simple round trip, the price is given before departure. See our services in English.
Our tips
- Book tastings and lunch in advance, especially at weekends and in high season.
- Wear comfortable shoes: the village streets are cobbled and steep.
- Leave a margin for the return if you have a train or a flight the same evening.
- For groups or families, our van takes up to 8 passengers.
